United Way Pivots to Remote Free Tax Preparation

Many of us count on tax refunds every year to pay down a debt or a tax ill, or to purchase a special something for your home, or yourself! Low-wage workers and those on meager fixed incomes, use tax refunds for basic needs like groceries, paying the rent or electric bill or replacing a refrigerator that hasn’t worked in months. United Way’s free tax preparation program for households making less than $57,000 annually provides much-needed income at no cost and with no stress. This year, in light of the pandemic, we have created a remote model; the only interaction involving the signing of a few documents, with the rest done remotely via phone, Zoom, and/or email. The IRS provided little guidance, so it was up to us to figure out how to do it. And thanks to volunteer Paul Edlund, and United Way’s Vice President Su Marcy and Chief Financial Officer DJ Hines, we have an efficient system in place, and our volunteer tax preparers are raring to go!  A pilot process will roll out in February, and if all goes well, we hope to serve the 75 people already on the waiting list, and many more.
